The Painter Anton Faistauer (1887 - 1930)
Who was Anton Faistauer and what does the hiking trail in Maishofen showcase?
The painter Anton Faistauer was born in St. Martin near Lofer and spent his childhood and youth in Maishofen. His eventful life was dedicated entirely to art, earning him numerous prizes and awards, until his untimely death at the age of only 43 in Vienna, after which he found his final resting place in the cemetery of Maishofen.
Faistauer became internationally renowned for the frescoes in the Salzburg Festival Hall (1926). His name is often mentioned alongside Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Paul Cézanne.
In 2010, on the initiative of the Anton Faistauer Forum and the Maishofen Tourist Board, the approximately 8 km long Anton Faistauer Hiking Trail was opened. It leads from the town center to Prielau, Mayrhofen and Schloss Kammer and tells, at 10 stations, the close connection of the artist to Maishofen.
